The aim of this website is to raise the profile of Hindley, and the folk who live there.
It is published occasionally with a humorous look at issues which Officialdom would much rather we didn't keep enquiring about.
Hindley folk invariably know best what is good for the Town. Officialdom (and that usually means people who do not live here) does not. They NEVER consult properly, as they think they know what is good for us. Hence they must expect to be lampooned when dotty ideas result in mistakes, and a proven wastage of your Council Tax.
HINDLEY, 'Our Town', not only a splendid place to live, but also one steeped in Civic Pride. HINDLEY is an important community with a long history. Two thousand years ago Roman soldiers tramped between the forts of Mancunium (Manchester), and Coccium (Wigan) past the area which lies between the Hospice and Kildare Grange.

Later, in the time of the Plantagent kings, the settlement bore the name Hindele (1212), and Hyndeleye (1292). These names mean 'doe field', and indeed deer are still seen sometimes to this day in our Borsdane Wood. A distinguished School was founded here in 1632 during the reign of Charles 1. Continued growth meant that by 1894 Hindley had been created an Urban District Council. Prominent people have been born, or have made their home here : like entertainer George Formby, Olympic runner Arthur Farrimond, author John Farrimond, Shakespearian actress Lucy Brayton, and the Leyland family who would endow our very popular Public Library.
There are many organisations who strive to maintain the quality of life in our town. Prominent amongst them is HINDLEY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION. This can be described as a pressure group, agitating for such things as better policing, transport, health, education, recreation and housing, and all manner of other facilities. WE MEET 2nd TUESDAYS, 7pm in 'THE WAKES'. Also 'THE FRIENDS OF HINDLEY STATION' agitate for better rail service. Buoyed by their successful lobbying for the Airport Service, and Sunday Service on the Atherton line, the Group continues to pressurise for better Rail Parking, and the Access for the Disabled. It was they who were the instigators of action to reclaim the Station Footpath's return to Public Use, which Labour Councillors have had the cheek to try to claim credit for. Where were they in 2004 when the Path was illegally closed? On the fence - - as usual.
F.O.H.S. MEET 2nd WEDNESDAYS, 12.00 'THE EDINGTON ARMS'. |
